By: UoN Masters of Teaching. /students/nsw/newcastle/#comment-12992 Sun, 01 Feb 2026 00:59:20 +0000 http://universityreviews.com.au/students/?p=203#comment-12992 UoN Masters of Teaching-Avoid course

I wanted to enrol in the online masters of teaching course, have been thinking about it for some time. I enrolled last yr but had to withdraw due to myself and my mother being unwell.
Like so many of these reviews, the admission process is atrocious!, of which i dscovered recently. I totally agree with someone’s comment above.
I am a very patient & happy person but last week i have spent being so stressed & upset, with those so called ‘customer service advisors’. They had no idea & some had language barriers which made it even more difficult. They kept putting me on hold to talk about me (in a negative way), so i found out, not only that, they were trying find out answers to questions they could not answer!
I was told that I missed enrolment for this semester & to go to another university when I was initially told by two people that I could get a late enrolment! My last email was so debilitating & upsetting it was attacking my personality because I was frustrated with the process not them as such.
Further, last year when I was trying to contact the teachers to ask about subjects etc, I could not get through to anyone even the course Co-Ordinator, being a new student I was so worried about what to do and where to go about what Subject was the best one to start with having not been at uni for 20yrs.
Recently, I spoke to a head of a department who was lovely in the first instance, which did change my mind about the course, but on the 2nd phone call she was quite rude to me, which was upsetting.
I wanted to do this course so badly to give back.
I was beginning to think it was me at first, but after reading these comments/reviews I was so relieved. I think I’ve made my decision about this uni!
Thankyou everyone for your wordly advice!

I studied the Bachelor of Medical Engineering (Hons) and have since graduated. Honestly, my review for this institution is very mixed. It definitely has some highs and some lows. I low-key felt like I got scammed and deceived by the university. My passion was to do medicine and engineering, hence the combination. When I finished the HSC and was looking for a place to study, one of the options I saw was Newcastle. To which they said this, and I quote, “the only University in NSW to offer a degree in Medical Engineering,” verbatim. I got some offers from universities in Sydney and Wollongong but decided to pass since some of my friends were attending here. It wasn’t until a year later that I found out that other universities in NSW did Medical Engineering. Theirs was called Biomedical Engineering and is honestly what everyone else and all the job employers refer to. Props to the UoN marketing team, I guess.

In terms of education, some of it was okay and some was below par. Especially the EXSS ones that they decided to include in the degree. There were honestly three courses that were specific and actually helpful toward my major. The other courses were just generalized. Though some were useful, like the Mechanics of Solids, Dynamics of Machine, Modelling and Control, and Fluid Mechanics, to name a few. The first year was decent due to being in a new environment and having some pretty good housemates, and we shared some pretty good times. I didn’t have the best experience with the teaching contents in the first year, though. Second year was alright and a bit of an improvement. Third year was average. The only year that I had a good time, in terms of academic-wise (meaning I was enjoying the content), was my last year. I had a pretty good supervisor for my FYP/Thesis as well. Overall, to sum it up, if I knew what I know now and I was still going here, I would have just done a Mechanical Engineering degree and used my electives to do some Medical courses. I actually recommend this for someone new looking to do this degree. In the end, I ended up adding it to my Medical Engineering anyway. Every now and then, I still have that feeling that I should have done my degree in Sydney. I give the academic contents 6.5/10 or maybe 7/10.

Regarding the campus, it’s pretty old and gray and gloomy. I’ve visited so many campuses from different universities and they all look so nice. UON just drains my energy when I get to the Callaghan campus. The campus life or life after classes on campus does not exist here. The campus they always advertised is the City one, so be aware where you’re studying. The food options on campus absolutely suck. There’s literally no option. The only noticeable ones are probably Subway and the kebab place. They had Gloria Jeans, Boost Juice, a good selection of Asian food, and more. But guess what, they’re all closed now and basically gone when they closed down the Hunter side. They always ask for feedback on how they can make the campus better and every year for five years straight, myself and others have stated we want more options. Their fix was implementing vending machines. Absolute BS. For this, I give 1/10 or 2/10.

Overall, 7.5/20 or 9/20. Anyway, that’s just my two cents that nobody asked for.

a student in here, don’t mind about the name here
interesting to say their actions and replies are spectacular
money , bills , tuition fees in email reply in speed to tell you to give your money to them and remember to pay for it
academic information related documents and info like coursework, preparation materials , advice in email reply very slow or they even forgot, reply out for days and days, no response
I know aus have a slow working rythnm , but their attitude to handle things is just sad

don’t study here, go away, money is their priority, you learn most of the stuff by yourself

Basically the college is just outdated and the learning environment is “interesting”
The content is ridiculous & very outdated
Foundation courses is not a recommendation
You think going to a international new university can make new frds and happy life ? NO
people simply doesnt care and form own comfort zones
wanna learn english ? doesnt help . People dont speak english
Some course requirements are over hard and have a leap in difficulty as week progresses
You treat others nice, you try the max effort on your courses , assignments
doesnt give a crap about it
Shame
